African American women experience tremendous disparities in their infant mortality rate, with 16 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 6 for white women and 6.6 for Hispanic women. About a third of us have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are obese, and do not “engage in leisure time activity,” or exercise. 16.9% of us live below the poverty line, with disparities here as well – 13.9% of white women, 28.2% of African American women, and 42.1% of Hispanic women meet this depressing criteria.
gulp, those disparities are quite shocking. sadly, louisiana’s numbers are once again expected to be the worst in the country’s.
i wonder where stink bugs would fall on this list
“A new website, called WaterMainBreakClock, tracks you-know-whats, twenty-four hours a day, and the cost in dollars to repair those breaks. So far today there have been 556 breaks nationwide; the cost of repairing water-main breaks since January of 2000 is $34,923,214,995 and counting. (Why does this blog care? Because every time a pipe breaks, there’s a possibility that bacteria can enter a water supply. The utility sends out a boil-water notice, busy people buy water in plastic bottles, and a little bit of faith in municipal systems erodes.)” via elizabeth royte
